The Artist - Jane Leitch

In 2005 Jane returned to the Chagford area where she grew up having lived in Australia and the New Forest. She is now Gidleigh based and is well known for her subtle evocations of Dartmoor and the farming landscape, nature and animals around her. As well as landscape and seascape Jane is a highly sought-after animal portrait artist with privately commissioned work taking up a good deal of her time. Her paintings display great representational accuracy and sensitivity to the character of the individual animal, qualities which make her ideally suited to painting portraits of well-loved domestic animals. Portraits are mainly worked in pastel while oil is her preferred medium for other subjects. Over the years Jane formed a number of art groups in the West Country. She currently holds weekly workshops in Gidleigh and gives one to one instruction at her studio as well as demonstrations for art groups throughout region and judging at annual group exhibitions. She has exhibited in various regional exhibitions and on a number of occasions with Society of Women Artists, firstly at Westminster and then the Mall Galleries; the Wildlife Art Society and was twice shortlisted for Pastel Society. She has been an Associate Member of the Southwest Academy and exhibits annually at Delamore Arts and bi-annually with Devon Open Studios. Jane has been published in The Field, The Shooting Times, Devon Life, Gordon Robinson’s Sinews of Falconry, Robert Coles’s Artists and Illustrators around the New Forest and Solent. In 2024 she was commissioned to illustrate Jennifer Bell’s children’s book ‘Ouch! and another privately published book for a family.
